NEW TV AD TELLS CONGRESS:
"HEAD START'S NOT BROKEN, DON'T BREAK IT."

WASHINGTON - The Children's Defense Fund Action Council announced that it is airing a new 30-second television ad focused on protecting Head Start's comprehensive preschool services from the Bush administration's plan to dismantle it. The spot, "Falling Behind," begins airing today in markets in Iowa, Ohio, Tennessee, Delaware and Pennsylvania.

The spot, produced by Fallon Minneapolis, will be available for viewing online by
5:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2003.

Text of the ad follows:

[Narrator]:

Since 1965, Head Start has helped 20 million children get ready for school.

But now, the President wants to block grant and dismantle Head Start.

That means a lot of our children are at risk of falling farther and farther behind.

Unless you act.

Call Congress at 202-224-3121. Tell Congress Head Start's not broken, so don't break it.

The mission of the Children's Defense Fund is to Leave No Child Behind and to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. CDF provides a strong, effective voice for all the children of America who cannot vote, lobby, or speak for themselves. We pay particular attention to the needs of poor and minority children and those with disabilities. CDF educates the nation about the needs of children and encourages preventive investment before they get sick, into trouble, drop out of school, or suffer family breakdown. CDF began in 1973 and is a private, nonprofit organization supported by foundation and corporate grants and individual donations. We have never taken government funds.
