HUNDREDS OF MOTHERS WITH CHILDREN
IN STROLLERS STORM CONGRESS

Mothers Deliver 12 Million "Voided Checks" to Rep. Delay
Urging Immediate Child Tax Credit for Working Families

WASHINGTON - Hundreds of flag-waving mothers with children in strollers today crowded the Capitol halls to visit Rep. Tom Delay (R-Tex.) calling for an immediate increase in the child tax credit to include 12 million hard working low-income families—including one million military families—excluded from the massive new tax cut law. The mothers were joined by Children's Defense Fund President Marian Wright Edelman and Senators and Reps. who support the measure.

The mothers with children in strollers delivered to Rep. Tom Delay 12 bags of "voided checks" that would have gone to hard working families. The Senate last week approved a revision of the tax cut law recently signed by the President that would provide an additional $154 on average per child to hard working low-income families with 12 million children. The new tax cut law provides each of America's 190,000 millionaires $93,500 on average.

We pay particular attention to the needs of poor and minority children and those with disabilities. CDF educates the nation about the needs of children and encourages preventive investment before they get sick, into trouble, drop out of school, or suffer family breakdown. CDF began in 1973 and is a private, nonprofit organization supported by foundation and corporate grants and individual donations. We have never taken government funds.
