Tomorrow Begins Today
We never give up working to improve the lives of children, and neither do you. You know children have only one childhood and it is right now. When one in five children lives in poverty, and every 29 seconds another child is born into poverty, we have a lot of work to do. Please help us do what we do best here at the Children’s Defense Fund. America simply cannot afford to leave any more children behind. A child’s tomorrow begins today.
Yesterday, you helped us sound the alarm to lawmakers. You let them know we’re watching, and we expect them to protect children from all budget cuts. Thank you for your calls to Congress.
Moving forward for children, we will keep a close eye on budget negotiations during this lame-duck session. We will let you know when it’s time to issue a clarion call to ensure our children’s tomorrow is not threatened by budget cuts. Together we can make a difference.
Today, please help us educate all Americans to the real threats of budget cuts by donating to our ‘Be Careful What You Cut’ campaign. We need to continue to make the economic case that cutting children from the budget now will cost all of us tomorrow.

Together, We Change the Odds
Who would have thought 22 years ago that over 700 youths would have been provided college scholarships and leadership development through our Beat the Odds® program? Together, we have been the catalyst for these young people to realize their hopes and dreams. They have gone on to become teachers, doctors, engineers, Peace Corps volunteers, and overall great citizens. Our recent celebrations in Washington, D.C. and Texas were a great success. Ten exceptional youths are now on the path to college and a successful adulthood. In the next two weeks we have two more celebrations, one in Los Angeles and one in New York. Help us change the odds for these extraordinary youths by making a donation to the Beat the Odds scholarship and leadership development fund.
For inspiration, check out our new webpage featuring 55 videos of our exceptional Beat the Odds recipients sharing their stories.
Policy in Action
With your support, we continue to produce the highest quality policy reports to arm advocates with the facts. Our most recent report, a joint effort with several of our national partners and support from Casey Family Programs, is helping states make landmark child welfare legislation work, providing a comprehensive update on how implementation is helping to promote permanent families for children in foster care with relatives. For states that have not yet started to implement the legislation and those wanting to do more, this is a must-use resource. With your help, we will continue making sure laws work for children.
Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today
Two years ago we set an ambitious goal to train 5,000 new young adult leaders by 2015. We made great strides towards that goal this year. We trained a record 1,225 Servant Leader Interns to deliver the Integrated Reading Curriculum at CDF Freedom Schools® sites and 1,500 young leaders were trained through the Young Adult Leadership Training (YALT®) program at CDF’s National Conference in July. These young leaders served children in their community throughout the year; heading up CDF Freedom Schools classrooms, educating and registering voters, and starting Children’s Action Teams (CATs) across the country. Invest in tomorrow’s leaders by making a donation today.
Forward for Children in 2013
Together, we have created dramatic change for children over the past 39 years. With relentless hard work and strong partnerships, we’ve seen dramatic gains for children. But we won’t stop until every child in America has a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Safe Start, a Moral Start, and a Fair Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. Please donate today so CDF can continue to create real change for children. Help us celebrate our 40th Anniversary by asking your friends, neighbors, and family to join our movement for children so together we can continue to provide a strong, effective and independent voice for all the children of America who cannot vote, lobby or speak for themselves.
